It has received several anime adaptations (with the OVAs being the most faithful to the manga) and some manga spinoffs like Negima! Neo and Negima Itto Bun and a live action TV series adaptation. It tells the story of Negi Springfield, a young genius child mage and a recent graduate of a magic academy who becomes a teacher at Mahora Academy. If he fulfills his task, he will earn his full magic license and become a Magister Magi but he is required to keep his magic a secret. Negi's greatest desire is to reunite with his father, Nagi Springfield, a legendary mage who has mysteriously disappeared, and this is one of the main reasons why he wants to become a Magister Magi. However, his task of taking care of his students becomes more complicated, and his quest to find his father goes underway, once he discovers that some of his students aren't as normal as they seem. . . The series is notable for being a fantasy action adventure series in disguise as a harem comedy. The first few volumes appear to be a harem comedy, but the manga gradually reveals its true nature. It is also notable for its massive cast of characters, detailed CG backgrounds, numerous references to video games, and extensive use of Latin for its spells and various names. The buildings seen in the series are inspired by real life architecture. Akamatsu first renders the buildings in 3d and then draws the characters in and around them. Its characters are also aware of shonen action adventure and JRPG conventions and often poke fun at them. The series' run was also known for frequently going on short breaks so that Akamatsu can do more research. The series is notorious for being a casualty of a behind the scenes clash between Akamatsu and publisher Kodansha over the copyrights to the series. To prevent Kodansha from taking the rights from Akamatsu, he chose to end Negima with a very abrupt and at the same time conclusive ending. However, a year after the series conclusion, he revisited the Negima universe with a sequel, UQ Holder!, that features a mostly different cast of characters.
